Volatility describes how a slot spreads its payouts — small amounts often, or large amounts rarely. Makers publish a label such as low, medium, high or very high, but no shared standard sits behind those words and no testing lab certifies them the way RTP is certified. Measured across real bets, games carrying the same label differ enormously: titles tagged 'very high' span a sevenfold range of actual payout spread.

Are high volatility slots better?

Neither is better on the maths — the house margin is set by RTP, not by volatility. High volatility means rarer wins that are larger when they come, which burns through a bankroll faster but offers bigger single results. Low volatility pays more often in smaller amounts and makes a session last longer. The choice is about the rhythm you want, not about the edge.

We measured it directly instead, and the labels do not survive contact with the data: two games both tagged “very high” can differ sevenfold in how far their biggest wins sit above a typical one.

What we measure instead

Two things converge fast enough to be worth reporting. Hit rate is the share of spins that return anything — a yes-or-no per spin, so roughly 9,600 spins pin it to about ±1%. Spread is how many times bigger the top 1% of wins is than a typical win; a game with a 3× spread pays in a narrow band, one with a 60× spread mostly dribbles and occasionally erupts. Both come from real bets, and both carry their sample size on this page.

Why there is no single score

Combining hit rate, spread, RTP and a maker's label into one number would mean inventing weights, and an invented number looks more authoritative than it deserves. The controls above let you set the priority yourself — that is your judgement applied to measurements, which is a different thing from our judgement dressed as a rating.
